Our story starts way back
Servite Primary School, formally known as Servite Convent Preparatory School, was owned and operated by The Sisters of Mercy. In 1978 Servite Convent Preparatory ceased to exist, as the Catholic sisters decided to migrate. It was at this time that they donated the entire property, as a gift, to the government of Jamaica.
Servite Primary School opened its doors as a public school in September 1978, with approximately 240 students on roll and six teachers on staff. Mrs. M. Boyd acted as principal for a short period, until the first principal was appointed – Mrs. Marva Smith.
In 1986, Mrs Marva Smith resigned the position as principal and Mrs. Isolyn Saunders took over the reins of leadership. Hard work and dedication were, and continue to be, the hallmark of Servite teachers, as well as students. The following years saw the school excelling academically with sterling performances in the Common Entrance Examinations. These results, over the years, set the stage for Servite to be acknowledged as one of the most sought after school in St. Ann.
Sadly, Mrs. Isolyn Saunders passed away after a short bout of illness and was succeeded by Mrs. Elaine Crawford. Mrs Crawford took up leadership in September 2003. Her unique style of leadership, coupled with the dynamic team of teachers, allowed the school to make tremendous strides academically, in extracurricular activities, improvement of physical plant and overall social atmosphere of the school. Mrs Elaine Crawford went on retirement from the educational service in December 2015; she was succeeded by Servite’s first male principal – Mr Nigel Palmer.
Mr Palmer, who is the current principal, took up the position on January 1, 2016. With the approval of the board and support of the teachers, Mr Palmer initiated the construction of a new block of classrooms for Grade 1. Along with this, much improvement was made to the physical plant and overall safety and security of the school. To continue with Servite’s tradition of holistic development, he also initiated the start of a martial arts and a special education programme.
To date Servite has had six Government Scholarships, and winners of the intra-regional quiz competition twice and an extra-regional competition once. Servite now stands as the top-performing school, in not only the GSAT examinations but in the G4LT and GAIN. At Servite, the academic performances are tempered by extra-curricular activities. We have won several gold medals at JCDC Festivals; we excel in club competitions and football. Most noteworthy though, Servite Primary has participated in the TVJ Junior Schools’ Challenge Quiz Competition and has reached round two on numerous occasions against renowned preparatory and primary schools.
Servite Primary now stands as the standard bearer of Region III, hoisted on the backs of the hardest-working members of staff in the country. Success is not only our password it is our way of life.
